Audience Alignment
Growing up, I felt like a pawn in someone else’s game — pushed and moved by situations and circumstances I didn’t choose and couldn’t control.
That feeling followed me for years, until I learned how to play chess.
That’s when it hit me: the pawn is one of the most significant pieces on the board. It doesn’t take big leaps. It moves gradually, subtly, one square at a time. But if a pawn makes it all the way across the board, it can become anything it wants — a Queen, a Rook, a Knight, a Bishop.
Anything. Where you start is not where you finish. That single realization became the foundation of an entire leadership framework. Every piece on the chessboard has a role, a strength, and a shadow side. The King isn’t just protected — he’s also passive when he should act. The Queen isn’t just powerful — she can dominate a room instead of building one up.
The Knight moves in ways others don’t expect, but that same unpredictability can become recklessness. Six pieces, six identities, twelve lessons in a single framework — and it all starts with the piece most people overlook. You might be reading this and think, I’m not a leader.
But leadership is nothing more and nothing less than influence — and every single one of us carries influence somewhere in our sphere. The question was never whether you have a level. It’s whether you know how to move. That’s the Sovereign Moves difference: we don’t just teach students how to lead. We teach them which piece they already are, and how to play both their strength and their shadow with wisdom.
"Sovereignty isn't about controlling everything on the board. It's about building a framework so precise that no single move can dismantle your position."
— Derek
Why “Sovereign”
Sovereignty isn’t about control over others — it’s about ownership of yourself. Your decisions. Your character. Your next move. Every session, every assessment, every conversation we have with a student is built around one question: are you playing the board, or is the board playing you?
What We Believe
We believe leadership is rooted in meaning and purpose — modeled after service, not status; healing, not performance; clarity, not chaos. Whether we’re in a classroom, a group home, a nonprofit, or a keynote room, the goal is the same: help the next generation make their next move with intention instead of instinct.
Where We’re Headed
Sovereign Moves works with students in grades 8–12, college-age young adults, and the organizations that serve them — through free assessments, six-session workshops, one-on-one coaching, school curriculum, and keynote speaking. Every offering starts in the same place: a single honest look at the board in front of you.
